A claim by a Snapchat user says an unnamed assistant chaplain of the Covenant University, Ota, Ogun state, slapped a 400 level student for pressing his ipod during a church service. The user via her handle @AHoeStory said, “So I am from Covenant University and today, during the second service, our Assistant Chaplin (pastor) was preaching, and he sighted a boy pressing his ipod in the congregation, he called the boy up to the altar, seized the ipod and slapped him in front of the chapel… it was just crazy.”

The act apes a similar occurrence some years ago in which the university proprietor, Bishop David Oyedepo slapped a teenager, whom he accused of being a witch. Drawing an avalanche of criticisms, Oyedepo’s action was perceived by persons and organisation as abuse of the rights of the teenage girl.

An e-mail sent to the chaplaincy for clarification on the story was not responded to as at press time.
