A construction crane crashed through the roof of Mecca’s Grand Mosque,x
killing at least 107 pilgrims and injuring 238 others, on Friday night. The mosque is undergoing an expansion, estimated to cost £14 billion. The construction is being handled by the Binladin Group, a company in the conglomerate of late Mohammed Bin Ladin, Osama Bin Ladin’s father. The disaster was believed to have been caused by the strong wind and heavy rains the holy city experienced on the fateful day. Reports said the crane smashed into the roofs in a particular flank of the mosque, killing pilgrims who had converged on the place.
