The death toll from the 21-storey building that collapsed in the Ikoyi axis of Lagos State last Monday has increased to 43.

Gbenga Omotoso, the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, announced this in a statement on Sunday.

The building, which was under construction at Gerrard Road in the highbrow area of Ikoyi, collapsed last week Monday, leaving the owner, Femi Osibona, his associates and some construction workers trapped under the rubble. A large number of persons, including Osibona, have been subsequently confirmed dead.

According to Omotoso, another body has been recovered from the rubble of the building on Saturday, thereby increasing the number of casualties to 43.

The statement read: “One more body has been recovered from the site of the collapsed 21-storey building in Ikoyi, Lagos.

“The body, which was recovered on Saturday, has brought the number of bodies retrieved from the rubble to 43.

“There are 15 survivors and 49 persons have reported that their loved ones are missing.

“At the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH), Yaba, the identification of bodies continues.

“Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, once again, commiserates with the families of those who died in the incident.”
