Banks, schools and business places were on Monday, shut in Owerri, Imo State, despite assurances by the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) that it would not enforce the sit-at-home order.
It was reported that streets were also deserted,.
Emmanuel Powerful, IPOB’s spokesman, had given assurances that the group would no longer enforce the weekly sit-at-home order initially declared to honour the group’s leader, Nnamdi Kanu, until he is released by the Department of States Services (DSS).
However, Daily Trust reports that as early as 6:00am, streets in the state capital were already empty.
Students who began their BECE (Junior WAEC) were said to be stranded, as they could not get vehicles to convey them to their schools.
But it was not stated if the examination went ahead as scheduled.
