A woman accused of stealing a baby has explained she found it on the road in Oyingbo area of Lagos. The woman, Yetunde Oshin, who is also a birth attendant, said she took the baby home, and, later, handed it to her father to look after. Oshin said the strange baby seen with her brought about gossips, and compelled her to relocate the infant to her father’s house in Ikorodu. It was believed the suspicious neighbours alerted the police, leading to Oshin’s arrest.
Upon interrogation by the police, Oshin narrated how she found the baby.
“On November 9, I was walking along the road in Oyingbo and found a baby on the ground. It was a female child, so I took it. That was the mistake I made. I should have gone to report to the police, but because it was a female baby, I liked her.
“That was how I took the baby home to Oyingbo. But when I saw how everyone was behaving and gossiping, I had to take the baby to my father in Ikorodu.
“Even when I could not come to Ikorodu from Oyingbo, my father was there to take care of her”, she said.
It was gathered that policemen from Igbogbo Police Station in Ikorodu were alerted of the incident and arrested the suspect’s father, Jamiu Jimoh.
Jimoh, a 65-year-old house painter told the police that he was not aware the baby was stolen. Also, he confirmed that the baby was found with him when he was arrested.
The case had since been transferred to the Community Women’s Rights Foundation, CWRF, for further investigation.
