Nigeria, a country abundantly blessed with natural resources, has struggled to rub shoulders with its counterparts the world over. For this glaring shortcoming, a lot of factors have been attributed as the cause. However, one of such factors is that the country is as it is because of too many public holidays.
This appalling reason has been so parroted that Newsbreak decided to check and see how many public holidays are there in Nigeria compared to other countries.
Public Holidays In United States
According to officeholidays.com, the United States of America has 17 public holidays for 2022. If a federal holiday falls on a Saturday, the preceding Friday is a holiday; if a holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is a holiday. However, the case is different for state holidays.
Public Holidays In China
For people who complain about the number of public holidays in Nigeria, it is certain they haven’t seen the number of national holidays in China. Workers in China take 25 days off as national holidays.
Public Holidays In The United Kingdom
In the United Kingdom, there is no legal definition of what constitutes a public holiday. As such, the holidays are categorised as bank holidays/regional holidays. Wherever the pendulum swings, the people have 16 days (bank/regional holidays) to themselves.
Public Holidays In Germany
In Germany, except for the German Unity Day, public holidays are determined by federal states and holidays are typically observed on their days. For a country with 18 days as regional/public holidays, the Germans are definitely not machines.
Public Holidays In Italy
The Italians love holidays, no doubt. However, holidays that fall on a weekend are observed on that day and no weekday is given in lieu. In total, Italy has 26 days of regional/public holidays.
Public Holidays In Japan
The Japanese do not appear greedy but they still enjoy 16 days of public holidays. It should be noted that except for New Year’s Day if a holiday falls on a Sunday, the following day is treated as a holiday instead.
Public Holidays In Norway
The Norwegians have a total number of 12 days as holidays in the year. For them, any holiday that falls on a Saturday/Sunday does not generate an additional compensation day of the holiday.
Public Holidays In Sweden
The Swedes, as they are fondly called, take 16 days off in a year as public holidays. Public holidays that fall on weekends remain on that date; no carry-over.
Public Holidays In Nigeria
The most populous black nation in the world, Nigeria, has a meagre 12 days as public holidays in 2022. In Nigeria, if a holiday falls on a Sunday, the following day is treated as a holiday instead. Going by the numbers, Nigeria can look elsewhere for the sources of her woes and not point accusing fingers at the number of the public holidays.
