Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has held a meeting with the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Osagie Ize-Iyamu; and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate and incumbent Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, ahead of the upcoming Edo governorship election.
The monarch met with the two leading candidates at his palace in Benin City, the Edo State capital, on Wednesday.
Also present at the meeting were Adams Oshiomhole and John Odigie-Oyegun, both former APC national chairmen and former Edo State governors.
Speaking during the meeting, Oba Ewuare II expressed his displeasure over the attitude of some politicians.
He said he is unhappy that the state has been in the news for the wrong reasons.
He explained that he is shocked that the relationship between Oshiomhole and Obaseki, which was very close and thought to bring peace and progress to the state, has turned sour bringing bad image to the state.
The monarch said the candidates should emulate former president Goodluck Jonathan, who congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari after losing the 2015 polls.
He admonished the political actors to avoid heating up the polity, adding that they must put the interest of the state first.
The royal father appealed to the political actors to sheathe their swords and urged them to avoid violence.
He demanded an assurance from the politicians that there will be peace before, during and after the elections.
After the meeting, the political leaders took turns to assure the traditional ruler that peace will reign in the state.
