Ahmed Makarfi and his National Caretaker Committee, apparently, have slammed to the ground Ali Modu Sheriff regarding the rightful group to present a candidate for the November Edo governorship election. The contending factions of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, produced two candidates from separate primaries, but INEC accepted Osagie Ize-Iyamu from the Makarfi’s. The acceptance has effectively shut out Sheriff’s candidate Matthew Iduoriyekwemwen, particularly deadline for submission of names was Tuesday night.
However, Sheriff’s group has vowed to challenge INEC in court, relying on a court out directing the electoral body to accept only its candidate.
Nick Dazang, Deputy Director, Publicity and Voters’ Education, INEC, said, “As of this evening, we have received 19 candidates from 19 political parties for the Edo governorship election.”
“These include the candidate of the Makarfi-led faction of the PDP. We received the candidate of the Makarfi-led faction because of the Port Harcourt court judgement plus the fact that we monitored its primaries, ” he added.
Other political parties listed include AA, ACD, ACPN, APC, APGA, LP, MPPP, NCP, NNPP, PDC, PPA, PPN, SDP, UPP and YDP.
