Egypt’s goalkeeper Essam El Hadary became the oldest player to feature at the African Cup of Nations when he played against Mali on Tuesday. The 44-year-old was brought on as a 25th minute substitute after Ahmed El Shennawy got injured.
El Hadary, a four-time winner of the tournament, beats the previous mark set by his fellow Egyptian Hossam Hassan, who 39 years, five months and 24 days old when he played at the 2006 edition.
The goalkeeper kept a clean sheet in the match as it ended 0-0.
