The Annual Eko Theatre Carnival will kick off on Monday, August 3, and end on Sunday, August 9.. It is a truism that when the rhythm changes, the sane must also change their dance.
Segun Adefila, Festival Director, said the 2020 edition of the carnival will be a combination of a ‘minimized Real’ and ‘maximized Virtual’.
Twenty-one different companies will serve varieties of artistic offerings to satiate your appetite.
Adefila said two distinguished guest speakers, who have excelled in their chosen professional careers, will be at the event.
“Our Day One (Monday, August 3) Guest Speaker is a seasoned scholar and practitioner, the immediate past Dean, Postgraduate School of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti, and current Honourable Commissioner for Arts, Culture, and Tourism in Ekiti State, Professor Rasaki Ojo Bakare. He shall be leading a discourse on Nigerian theatre in the age of pandemic.
“The session shall be moderated by Dr. Funmi Adewole, a lecturer at De Montfort University, Leicester England. She is also a dance scholar, writer, storytelling artist and dramaturge. In 2019, she was awarded a life-time achievement award for contributions to Dance of the African Diaspora by One Dance UK, the UK National body for Dance.
This session promises to be an engaging and enriching encounter judging by his pedigree,” he said.
Adefila also disclosed that on day two, Atunyota Alleluya Akpobome, popularly known as Ali Baba, Grand Comedian of the Federal Republic (GCFR). He said he was specifically chosen due to his firm belief in collective growth.
“Ali Baba’s philosophy is that the business of comedy is big enough to accommodate all who are determined to make a successful career out of it. To this end, he supports, and mentors several comedians. He also ensures that a high standard of professionalism is maintained. Ali Baba shall be discussing Entrepreneurship and the Arts. This session shall be moderated by Princess Damilola Adekoya, better known as Princess in the Stand Up Comedy industry,” he said.
Also lined up for the ETC are works of brilliant playwrights, directors, choreographers, actors, musicians, dancers and visual artists.
Adefila said the organisers will sell 20 tickets from each day of the festival, urging people to book early. He added all attendees would not be allowed into the venue without face masks.
