Promoters and activists of the EndSARS movement have registered their displeasure with Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party for his decision to draft John Enenche a retired Army General into the Labour Party’s presidential campaign team.
Enenche, a former army information director who insisted that the killings of #EndSARS protesters in 2020 at Lekki Toll Gate, Lagos, were untrue, was listed as one of the 1,234 people on the North-Central Obi-Datti campaign team, which was assembled to support Peter Obi’s presidential campaign.
The ex-General claimed that DJ Switch’s Instagram live video of #EndSARS protesters dying from Nigerian army bullets was doctored.
Nearly two years after the horrifying incident where men in military uniform invaded the protest venue in Lekki and fired at protesters, the video of his claims has reappeared on Twitter.
Obi draws a chunk of his support from Nigerian youths who mostly joined the EndSARS movement either in person or online.
Renowned Nigerian journalist Fisayo Soyombo tagged Peter Obi “one of the old folks that need to be changed” for appointing Enenche as a member of his campaign organisation.
“By appointing John Enenche, an officer who claimed photos and videos of slain #EndSARS protesters were ‘photoshopped’, into his presidential campaign council, Peter Obi confirms what many have always said: he is ‘one of them,” Mr Soyombo wrote.
Another Journalist who had openly supported Obi registered his displeasure with the development was Benjamine Hundeyin.
“I support Peter Obi because I believe in his mission and candidacy. I also believe that anyone directly involved in Lekki Massacre denialism should be drowned in a vat of hydrochloric acid. Both of these statements are true at the same time, and I mentioned only one name here,” Hundeyin wrote.
On her part, Rinu Oduala, one of the main activists at the 2020 protest, subtly expressed her dissatisfaction with the development by echoing the views of Fisayo and Hundeyin through shares and retweets.
However, reports claim that the party had promised to look into the agitation and effect changes that will address the grievances of Obi’s supporters.
