Authorities in Lyon have confirmed that two fans have been stabbed at a Euro 2016 fan zone on Wednesday. Police say they had intervened in a fracas which erupted when some fans singing the national anthem had clashed with some Albania fans in the city. Police stated that no weapons were found on the scene and nobody has been arrested in connection with the crime.
Officials in the city are due to have a meeting with UEFA and the private security company in charge of the area to review procedures after the first major breakdown of order in the city. The incidence left a Belgian with an injury to his backside and a Frenchman with an injured back.
Russia and England fans had begun the ‘festival of madness’ after both teams played out a 1-1 draw in Marseille. The resulting violence resulted in Russia getting a suspended disqualification from the tournament as well as a fine of £120,000. Recall that England fans clashed with Marseille locals on the night they arrived the city with the police having to teargas them to restore order. The locals had reportedly started throwing bottles at the fans drinking in nearby bars before the fight started.
