World champions, France, have been dumped out of the ongoing UEFA Euro 2020 Championship by Switzerland on penalties in the round of 16.
The game had ended 3-3 after extra time, with Switzerland taking the lead in the first half.
The Didier Deschamp’s men started the second half like a house on fire, with two goals from striker, Karim Benzema, and a stunner from Paul Pogba to give the World Cup holders 3-1 lead.
The Swiss responded late in the game by scoring to late goals, which took the game to extra time, during which neither of the teams could find the winner.
At the shootout, Switzerland scored all their five kicks, while their goalkeeper, Yann Sommer, saved Kylian Mbappe’s decisive kick for France, sending the Vladimir Petkovic’s men to celebrate in front of their fans in Bucharest.
The game capped a dramatic day the European championship, with Spain, Switzerland’s next opponent in the quarterfinals, having to come from behind to beat Croatia also in extra time.
The Luis Enrique side won 5-3.
