President Muhammadu Buhari shelved his 70th birthday owing to the sudden death in a plane crash of, then, Kaduna state governor, Patrick Yakowa and national security adviser, Owoye Azazi, a retired army general. Rotimi Fashakin, who spoke for Buhari’s former party, the defunct Congress for Progressives Change, CPC posted the comment to Facebook. While congratulating Buhari on his 73rd birthday, Fashakin reminisced on how the president’s friends planned unsuccessfully for his previous birthday.
“In 2012, friends and acolytes across Nigeria planned a shindig for your 70th Birthday celebration. Arrangements for a memorable ceremony had been finalised: Bishop Hassan Matthew Kukah accepted giving the Birthday lecture; special birthday documentary produced; Booking for the hall secured and payment made for food and drinks.
“Barely a week to the day, the kaduna state governor, Mr Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa and the former National Security Adviser, Gen Andrew Owoeye Azazi died in a helicopter crash. You went beyond sending condolences to the bereaved family and nation, you cancelled the Birthday celebration planned for you. That, for me, was a lesson in statesmanlike conduct and demeanour!”
Fashakin, also, said Buhari’s ascension to power was foretold on his 72nd birthday, the same day he picked incumbent vice-president Yemi Osinbajo as his running-mate. The lawyer-cum-politician said after eating and drinking, “the guests predicted that your (Buhari) next birthday celebration shall be in Aso villa after your installation as President of Nigeria,” Fashakin stated.
