Suspected secessionists under the auspices of Biafra Nations League (BnL), operating in the Bakassi peninsular and some parts of Cross River State, on Thursday reportedly kidnapped a female oil worker in Idabato subdivision, an area ceded to Cameroon, Newsbreak reports.
Top sources within the BnL said that the militant group, known as ‘Black Marine’, at about 11am ambushed a commercial boat heading to Ndian, South West Cameroon, and whisked the victim away. The abductee’s name was given as Cecile Doumara, but we are yet to ascertain the company she works with.
This newspaper recalls that about three weeks ago, the same group reportedly attacked the Iyang jetty in Bakassi, killed a policeman and injured others.
Meanwhile, when this reporter called the Cross River State police command’s spokesperson, DSP Irene Ugbo, to obtain comments on the matter, she rejected reports of the abduction, saying “no no, there was nothing like that”.
Westwards from Bakassi lies Nigeria’s oil producing Niger Delta, the hydrocarbons heartland of one of Africa’s leading oil exporters. Bakassi is also known to contain offshore oil deposits.
