A couple whose apology love letter was written by the wife in the early 1990s and went viral recently has spoken exclusively to Newsbreak about what led to the piece.
A man, identified as Dare Adekunle, took to Twitter on Sunday to share an apology love letter written by his mother in 1993 to his father.
The letter which circulated on the internet partly read: “I want you to know that you’re the only person I keep and I don’t have any boys at Lagos… One love keep us together.”
The letter brought reactions from Nigerians, many of them terming the act as “true love”.
Speaking In an interview with Newsbreak, Mrs Kemifayo Olanike Adekunle, who wrote the letter to her love interest, Mr Adionu Adekunle, explained that she wrote the letter of apology after a misunderstanding with her man, who was then her boyfriend.
The letter, she explained, came as a form of reassurance to her lover, who was having mixed feelings about their relationship.
The couple disclosed that at the time, Mr Adekunle was in school at Ondo State, while Mrs Adekunle was in Lagos State learning hairdressing.
“I needed to be sure she didn’t have someone else. After I received that letter, I knew with no doubt she is the one for me,” Mr Adekunle told our correspondent.
According to Mr Adekunle, he and his wife have been writing love letters to each other for years, adding that he treasured the letters and ensured he kept them safe.
Explaining how they met each other, Mrs Adekunle said they met in 1992 through a friend and immediately fell in love with each other.
“I fell in love with her because she was very respectful, she kneels to greet me and she possesses a good character,” Mr Adekunle added.
On how they have been able to successfully live together as a married couple for over 25 years with three children, Mrs Adekunle said her lasting relationship with her husband is built on love and understanding.
She stated that her marriage is not synonymous with that of the new generation, who she claimed, puts money first without knowing if the man or woman is good or not.
“Back then, he does artwork and anytime it’s my birthday, he does beautiful artwork to celebrate me. He treats me nicely and I love him,” she said.
