The recent outroar by Nigerians and foreigners about corrupt officials in Nigerian airports has come to the public eye of government officials after different people shared their ugly experience with these officials who wanted to extort money.
The Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, in particular, has been on the map as one of the most corrupt airports, with the airport staff allegedly devising means to extort travellers, especially incoming travellers and foreigners.
Reacting to the slew of complaints on social media, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has warned that bribe-seeking officers at Nigeria’s airports will be barred for life from working at airport terminals across the country, regardless of whether the violator works in the government or private sector.
The FAAN Managing Director, Capt. Rabiu Yaduda said this to journalists in Abuja on Monday after an emergency meeting with FAAN’s management, some airport managers and the Special Adviser to the President on Ease of Doing Business, Dr Jumoke Oduwole.
Yaduda said the indiscipline at the airports is embarrassing FAAN and Nigeria.
“Recently, we had videos showing the acts of indiscipline and extortions at our airports. They are embarrassing to FAAN, the aviation industry, and Nigeria. So we had a management meeting comprising all FAAN airport managers, with the special Adviser to the President on Ease of Doing Business,” he said.
Yaduda explained that the meeting would be escalated at all the airports across the country.
He said: “They will inform them that any violation or acts of indiscipline, recorded or caught, FAAN will escalate. We will write to their companies and any violator will lose his or her On Duty Card (ODC) permanently, which means you will lose your access card into the airport terminal permanently.”
The FAAN boss also urged to report acts of indiscipline at the airports to the appropriate authorities.
