Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal will hand striker Wayne Rooney a return to action on Wednesday night’s FA Cup quarter-final replay against West Ham at Upton Park. Rooney made his first appearance for the Red Devils since February in an Under 21s game on Monday where he played for 61 minutes.
Van Gaal had said Rooney could ‘maybe’ feature in the final ever FA Cup game at Upton Park if he came through that match, which he did, but a spot on the bench is all he will be handed. Rooney’s return for the season’s run-in will provide a boost to Van Gaal, whose side have scored just five times in their past eight fixtures. Rooney will also be eager to book a place on Roy Hodgson’s team-sheet for the European Championships in France this summer, having seen Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy continue to star for both club and country while he has been out.
