The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning have said they are not aware of claim that Nigeria printed N60 billion last month to pay its federal allocation last month.
The rebuttal comes after Godwin Obaseki, Governor of Edo State, had last Thursday claimed that the Federal Government printed the aforementioned amount to augment what the three tiers of government shared in March.
Governor Obaseki’s statement elicited a lot of comments, with lots of persons on both the traditional and social media questioning the state of the country’s economy.
However, Osita Nwanisobi, CBN spokesperson, said he is not aware of any N60 billion that was printed.
“I am not aware of that (N60bn printed by government),” Nwanisobi told the Punch.
In the same vein, Yunusa Abdullahi, the media aide to Zainab Ahmed, Minister of Finance, said enquiries about the matter should be forwarded to either the Edo State Governor or the CBN.
“Please direct your questions to the governor who made the claim or the CBN,” Abdullahi said.
