The Lagos state police command has arrested two fake police officers for alleged impersonation and extortion.
The suspects, Jumoke Mutairu, 45, and Uzoma Johnson, 29, were reportedly creating awareness for people on issues relating to crime and collect a service charge of N1200 from unsuspecting members of the public. They allegedly give security alerts to schools, churches, hotels and some other organizations.
The police said that the suspects were on June 20, 2018 arrested, wearing black T-shirts, black beret with police insignia in the Alaka area of Lagos state.
According to the police, the suspects upon interrogation said they had been in the business for 15 years and were trained for six months by their alleged leader, one Johnson O. Oni.
Imohimi Edgal, the Lagos Police Commissioner, told journalists, during a press briefing on Wednesday that the police was still searching for the alleged leader of the group who is currently at large.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, one of the suspects, Jumoke Mutairu said that “we don’t collect salary, we only get commission on the materials we sell. We sell an outline which goes for ₦1,200 and my commission is ₦300 on each one.”
Edgal said that the police recovered the sum of four thousand naira (N4, 300) and assorted document/certificates, suspected to be fake.
He said that the suspects will be charged to court after investigations.
