There was fanfare at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja as the first batch of Nigeria’s paralympic team arrived the country from Rio, venue of the just-concluded Paralympics.  The team was welcomed by the acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youths and Sports, Luka Jonathan. He thanked the team was doing the nation proud by winning 12 medals, the country’s best ever, at the Games.

“We are celebrating you now because you have done this country proud. History was made with your victorious outing to Rio.

“We appreciate your individual and collective efforts which have placed Nigeria on a very prominent position on the medals table.

“I am happy that Nigeria has led other African nations in this Games,’’ he said, adding that a more elaborate event would be held to celebrate the Paralympians,” Channelstv.com quoted Jonathan as saying.

The Olympic team, which won just a medal, a bronze in the men’s football event,  had arrived the country with no fanfare some weeks ago.
