In contrast to assertions that former Lagos governor Bola Tinubu brought prosperity to the state, Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) contender for president in 2023, asserted on Monday that Lagos, Nigeria’s economic center, was developed by the federal government.
The former vice president also claimed that Bola Tinubu, the party’s presidential candidate, lied about developing Lagos following the nation’s restoration to democracy in 1999.
Atiku warned residents of the state against electing APC to office at both the federal and state levels, claiming that “a single family has ruled the state for 23 years” during his speech at the PDP presidential rally in Lagos’ Tafawa Balewa Square.
“53 years ago when I came to Lagos in 1969, there was only one Carter Bridge built by the Europeans, no Second Mainland Bridge, no Third Mainland Bridge, no Tafawa Balewa Square, that was when I came to Lagos, all of you were not born then.
“Now, I want to tell you, this is a fact, you can go and check: the Federal Government built the Second Mainland Bridge, the Federal Government rebuilt the Old Carter Bridge, the Federal Government built the Third Mainland Bridge, rebuilt Agege Motor Road, rebuilt Ikorodu Road, all the major roads connecting Island and Mainland.”
He claimed that since 1999, the governments of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), and the APC in Lagos have been lying about the state’s development.
“The AD, ACN and APC governments have been telling you lies that they developed Lagos, they did not develop Lagos at all, na lie; they are lying to you,” he said.
Atiku asked Lagosians to vote for the PDP’s governorship candidate in Lagos, Olajide Adediran, also known as Jandor, to free themselves from the Tinubu family’s domination.
