Five persons heading to a naming ceremony in Niger State, have died in a boat mishap that occurred at Isa’i in Farar-Doka, Mariga Local Government Area of the state.
The boat, which conveyed ten passengers from Unguwan dan Daudu, was said to have capsized few minutes after takeoff at Isa’i.
Idris Ibrahim, chairman of Mariga local government, who confirmed the incident, said five people were rescued, while one sustained injuries.
Also confirming the incident, the Director-General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Ibrahim Inga, blamed the incident on overflooding of the Farar Doka stream.
“The incident happened at Farar Doka stream due to over flood. They were nine on the canoe, four rescued, while five got missing but their bodies have been recovered and evacuated,” he said.
