Four men were Tuesday arraigned before an Ebute-Metta Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing five cars in the Bariga area of Lagos State.
The defendants: Joshua Tabiti Adeleke, 31; Ahmed Alli, 24; Moses Ofoke, 31 and Oluseyi Arokoyo, 34, are standing trial on a six-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.
They were said to have stolen the cars, which were parked by the roadsides on April 27, 2017, at around 12 am.
The prosecuting officer, Chinalu Nwadione, told the court that the defendants were about to sell the stolen cars, which belonged to different owners when they were caught.
He said the cars included a gold Toyota Corolla car with Reg. No. AKD 832 DY, valued at N500,000, which belonged to one Ekunday Olatunji and a gold Toyota Camry car with Reg. No. GGE 862 DA, valued at N450,000, which belonged to one Clement Raphael. Also, a green Toyota Camry, Saloon car, marked KSF 109 AW, valued at N550,000, which belonged to Sanusi Fatai.
The rest are a cream Toyota Camry with Reg. No. KTU 684 CU, valued at N1.2 million, which belonged to WQ dry-cleaning company, a gold Toyota Camry car with Reg. No. JJJ 566 EJ, valued at N405,000, Which belonged to one Idemetuk Uduak Ufot.
Nwadione added that the offence contravened Section 280 (1) (a) and punishable under Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.
However, the defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against them.
The presiding magistrate, O.I. Adelaja, granted them a bail of N500,000 with two responsible sureties in like sum.
The case was adjourned till January 15, 2018.
