Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud and Alex Iwobi were the stars as the Gunners emerged 2-0 winners over visitors Crystal Palace on New Year’s Day. Giroud opened scoring for the hosts with spectacularly hit scorpion kick from Alexis Sanchez’s cross. The game looked one-sided as the gunners continued to lay siege to the Palace goal with Wayne Hennessey rising to occasion to keep the score line respectable.
In the second half, Alex Iwobi headed home after the Palace defence had deflected a cross in his path. The Super Eagles player struck his header towards goal with two Palace defenders failing to clear.
Sam Allardyce’s men had their go at the Arsenal goal as well forcing Petr Cech into triple saves from Christian Benteke, Yohan Cabaye and Andros Townsend.
The result put Arsenal in third place three behind second-placed Liverpool and nine behind leaders Chelsea. Crystal Palace remain two spots above drop zone in 17th.
