The forthcoming national lightweight boxing title bout between reigning champion, Nurudeen “Prince” Fatai, and Otto “Joe Boy” Joseph has been dubbed the sport’s equivalent of ‘El Clasico’, the grudge-drenched rivalry  between Spanish football giants, Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Speaking about the bout in Lagos on Thursday, Jenkins Alumona, Managing Director of Flykite Sports, promoters of the fight, explained that with the title at stake and an almighty grudge arising from the previous encounter between the two boxers, the bout bears a close resemblance to the world’s fiercest club rivalry.

“It is no exaggeration to say this fight is similar to ‘El Clasico’. So much is at stake: pride, glory and opportunity to avenge defeat or establish supremacy. Both boxers are teak-tough and ready. This is a fight any genuine boxing fan cannot afford to miss,” said Alumona.

The explosive element of the fight, which headlines GOtv Boxing Night 7 holding at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Lagos, on 1 May, has its origin in the defeat by technical knockout of Nurudeen by Joe Boy during their challenge duel at GOtv Boxing Night 4.

Two previous attempts at arranging a rematch were thwarted by a hand injury to which Nurudeen attributed his defeat, which he said he is ready to avenge at GOtv Boxing Night.

Sponsored by GOtv, the event, which is targeted at reviving boxing in Nigeria, is supported by MultiChoice, Paragonis Multimedia Limited, Complete Sports, KSquare Security, Newsbreak.ng, Brila FM, Bond FM and SuperSport. SuperSport will broadcast it in 47 African countries.

Other fights scheduled for the event include the cruiserweight challenge contest between Idowu “Noble” Okusote and Chibuzor “Chibunky” Vincent; lightweight challenge bout between Rilwan “Real One” Oladosu and Osamudiamen “Shiso” Goodluck, a graduate of the GOtv Boxing NextGen Search; and a middleweight match-up of two graduates of the search, Chukwuebuka “Wise King” Ezewudo and Ganiyu “Energy” Kolawole.

The fight line-up is completed by a light welterweight bout between Rilwan “Baby Face” Babatunde and Tope ‘’Berinja’’ Agboda as well as a heavyweight pairing of Ebenezer “Anambra Tiger” Okoli and Godwin “Emirate” Michael.

The best boxer at the event will go home with N1million cash prize and the Mojisola Ogunsanya Memorial Trophy.
