Unknown gunmen have attacked the Jos correctional facility in Plateau State.
Gunshots were fired around the facility as the gunmen tried to breach the facility on Sunday.
Gabriel Ogaba, the spokesperson of the Plateau State Police Command, confirmed the incident. He, however, insisted that security agents dealt with the situation.
“Yes, some gunmen attacked the prison today,” TheCable quoted Ogaba as saying.
“We are currently on top of the situation.”
Also speaking on the development, Francis Enobore, a Controller of Corrections and the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Correctional Service, said the invaders were said to have arrived at the custodial centre at about 5:20pm and immediately made for the main gate.
Enobore noted that the gunmen engaged the armed squad personnel of the NCoS in a gun battle before they broke into the yard, but stated that they were encircled as reinforcement from other law enforcement agencies arrived.
“Although they gained entrance to the yard, they are however trapped within as men from sister security services were immediately mobilised to assist the armed guards to cordon the perimeter wall and the entire area,” Enobore said.
“The situation is presently under control as the attackers firing power is being subdued by superior fire from a combined team of security agencies.”
This is the second time gunmen will be attacking the Jos prison this year after an attack in July 2021.
