Unidentified gunmen on Saturday attacked the convoy of Samuel Ortom, Governor of Benue State.
It was learnt that the gunmen reportedly opened fire on the governor’s convoy at Tyo-Mu community, along the Makurdi-Gboko road.
It was gathered that Governor Ortom was on his way to Makurdi, the state capital, when the gunmen opened fire on his convoy but were repelled by his security men.
Briefing journalists, Governor Ortom described the gunmen as ‘herdsmen’, saying about 15 of the attackers trailed him to the river bank where he was on foot to the river bank with his security details to inspect a farm.
He said the gunmen opened fire on them.
The governor praised his security details, who, according to him, were about six in number, for responding quickly to the attack and repelled them promptly before providing cover for him to return to safely to his vehicle.
He said troops of Operation Whirl Stroke, the police and DSS have mobilised to the forest between Tyo-Mu and Abinse where the said armed herdsmen camp to comb the area.
He also called for the arrest and prosecution of the leadership of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, which only last week, gathered in Yola, the Adamawa state capital, to single him out for assassination.
