Gunshots were reportedly heard on Thursday in Aba police area command, Abia State.
Residents were said to be going about their normal activities when gunshots reverberated in the area.
Daily Trust reports that all roads around the police command have now been barricaded and residents have been ordered to return to their homes.
The newspaper said a top police source in Aba disclosed that security operatives had received intelligence that the gunmen who unleashed terror on security formations in Imo State were on their way to Aba area command.
Imo has been under attack since the beginning of this week, with another police division attacked on Wednesday following the incident on Monday, which saw the police command headquarters and a correctional facility overran by unknown gunmen.
The attackers also freed over 1,800 inmates and razed many vehicles.
