A total of 130 women sold in Afghanistan by a man who duped and lured them into believing they would be married to money have been arrested by the Taliban on Tuesday, officials said.
Damullah Seraj, the Taliban provincial police chief, told reporters, how the alleged was arrested in northern Jawzjan province late on Monday,
He said: “We are still in our initial stages of the investigation. We hope to find out more about this case later,”
Mohammad Sardar Mubariz, a district police chief in Jawzjan, told AFP how the man had targeted poor women in desperate need to improve their circumstances.
“However, after informing them and assuring the women that he would find them a wealthy husband. But later move them to a different province where they were instead sold into servitude.
“Which he had allegedly trafficked 130 women in such a way,” Mubariz noted.
Since their return to power about three months ago, the Taliban are trying to contain a spate of crimes such as robberies and kidnappings in the big cities.
However, on Tuesday, the Taliban interior ministry said 60 people including members of the passport department was arrested for forging documents to obtain passports.
The ministry noted that they are temporarily closing the passport office in Kabul for maintenance.
