It was barely a few days ago that the story of Purity Emezana got the attention of Nigerians and the media after her boyfriend, a former operative of the defunct State Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), reportedly pulled the trigger on her in Warri, Delta State.
It was learnt James Eno, attached to Ozoro Area Command in the Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State, shot Emezana on 27 October for demanding an end to their relationship.
In a recent interview with BBC News Pidgin, the 24-year-old Emezana narrated how she survived the gun attack. Speaking from her hospital bed, Purity she was shot by her boyfriend of five years out of anger and jealousy.
According to her, she and Eno were having some issues in the relationship, and she discovered some things which her boyfriend had allegedly hidden from her. This, she said, led to her decision to end the relationship, although she did not inform him.
She explained that when he came over to her place, he told her he had been informed that she is having an affair with someone at the place she is running her business.
Emezana said she told him that the man in question was just her neighbour and they were not dating, but he did not believe her. She then told him that they should end the relationship because she was tired of the constant quarrels.
Eno, she said, then went to meet her mother and demanded a refund of the money he used in setting up a business for her. From the way he spoke, the gunshot victim said her mother sensed the threat in his tone and told him to give them some time to pay the money in instalments, which he accepted.
She, however, said Eno did not wait for them to pay him the money as agreed, but, instead, stormed her parents home at a later date with a gun and shot her.
Narrating how she survived the gunshot incident, Emezana stated that when Eno brought out the gun to shoot her, she quickly raised her hand, and the bullet burst through her hand and chest and came out from her back. According to her, it is a miracle the bullet did not touch her heart and lungs, but it broke three of her ribs.
Explaining further, she said when her ex-lover shot her, she ran inside her house and pretended to be dead. She stated that the noise from generators around the vicinity did not allow her neighbours to hear the gunshot. She, however, later ran out to meet her neighbours to raise an alarm, and they rushed her to the hospital for medical attention.
She stated she was rushed into the theatre for surgery and that since the operation, she has been finding it hard to breathe well.
Emezana is, however, hopeful that she will soon fully recover.
The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the incident, saying that they are on the hunt for Eno, who is now at large.
