Anticipation has been gradually building since the organisers of Big Brother Naija announced that the sixth edition of the show will be held this year. Excitement is in the air since MultiChoice Nigeria, the showrunners, announced that the ultimate winner will go home with N90 million worth of prizes, which is N5 million bigger than the prize for the last edition.
Fans have eagerly taken to social media to speculate what the tag name of this season would be, how the audition process for the potential housemates – which is ongoing – would be, and who would be the final housemates and how many they would be. Another interesting topic that fans and observers of the show have been openly chatting about is how the Big Brother House would look like.
It is noteworthy that a debate of how the physical shape of the house would look like is already gaining huge traction on social media as there were considerable changes to its setting last year. With the advent of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and the need to ensure the safety of both the housemates and the crew behind the scenes, the house was made to be very spacious and guests, including the well-beloved, the ever balaclava-wearing ninjas, were barred from entering the house.
One of the considerable differences was the party arena, the venue of the spicy Saturday night parties. Unlike the ‘Pepper Dem’ season in 2019 – the fifth edition and the first to be staged in Nigeria – where the venue was outside the main building, the party arena for the ‘Lockdown’ edition held last year was the general Arena room. This was supposedly done to create more space for the housemates to ‘buggy on the dance floor’ and prevent a cluster in the arena. This, however, did not sit down well with some fans who suggested that the party room lacked the vibe, unlike previous editions. Will the party arena be returned to its former, more intimate area of the house? Only time will tell.
Another change from last season was the Head of House lounge. The lounge was originally situated opposite the sleeping rooms and just before the changing area, but it was moved to outside the main building. The new arrangement allowed for a palatial arrangement, fitted with a sitting room, bedroom and restroom, and equipped with preferential benefits such as a well-stocked fridge and board games befitting for a king or queen as the Head of House is regarded. Fans of the show hailed the upscale privileges for the HoH but, as ever, pointed out that with the place being away from the main house, it inhibited some HoHs from hearing Biggie’s instruction and also kept some of them detached from fellow housemates. Therefore, how would the HoH lounge be for this season? We would have to patiently wait for an answer.
Also similar to the aforementioned point is the Head of House chair. During the ‘Pepper Dem’ edition, the HoH chair was situated in the sitting room/lounge and made the winner for the week truly feel like the ‘first among equals’, especially during brief readings and the live shows. However, in a bid to create more space, the chair was moved to the dining section of the house. This made the HoH only have a feel of the chair during brief readings and not during the live show. Some fans have clamoured for the chair to return to the lounge. Will the show organisers heed such a clamour?
The saloon room was a pioneer last season. As stated earlier, because of COVID-19 protocols, the saloon room was introduced due to the ban on outside specialists, such as professionally stylists who usually come from outside to make the hair-do of housemates. This not only forced but also inspired housemates to create some spectacular, as well as funny hairstyles. It’s still a guess as to whether the internal saloon room will be maintained or whether it will be returned to its usual location, the garden.
The lounge and the Diary Room underwent a massive transformation in the past two seasons. With specific emphasis to last season, the lounge was made to become more capacious, with more chairs added to accommodate the number of housemates, while the size of both the Diary Room and the chair in there increased considerably, having been moved to the dining area. Also, rather than the traditional bell, a drum stick and a crash cymbal were the instruments for housemates to hit before gaining access to the diary room. Are we going to get another spacious lounge space and will the location of the diary room be maintained or moved to another location within the house and will it be more expansive or smaller for the housemates to have an intimate conversation with Big Brother? We can’t wait to see it.
One interesting area of the house for both housemates and the fans is the garden. It’s the area where they can gather to unwind or in some cases, carry out some gruelling tasks. However, the garden is known more for its serenity and lush green grass. In season four of the show, a replica Danfo bus was situated and it has remained the favourite seating apparatus for fans. For season five, a swinging chair was introduced, as well as a large-size bed to better aid the comfort of the housemates. What kind of arrangement and seating apparatus will the garden have this season?
These are burning questions been asked by fans on social media as they eagerly anticipate the new season. But we all wait have to wait for the big reveal, which will happen in a few weeks from now.
