Business tycoon Alihadi Dafilla Ali on Wednesday, September 29, testified at the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi, Kenya, of a plan to have him robbed of his Ksh120 million (about N447 million) in his Nairobi bank account.
The 70-year-old tycoon told magistrate Rose Otieno that he learned that a woman identified as Fatuma Mercy Njoki had faked his death by forging a fake death certificate, including a phoney marriage and birth certificate for a non-existing child called Amina Zainab.
The plot was to have Njoki use the certificates to prove she was closely associated with the tycoon and access Ksh120 million (about N447m)..
Ali received a call summoning him to a bank along Nairobi’s University Way – while working in his Kampala office.
After missing his flight on time, Ali travelled from Kampala to Nairobi to understand the logic behind his summoning.
He met up with two officers from the Central Bank of Kenya and the city bank manager in the bank who raised queries of suspicion.
“They asked me whether I was married and with a child. I stated that I was once married to Fatuma Abdulmoniem, a Yemeni lady I divorced in 1983. She went back to her country, and we had no child together.” Ali narrated.
He later learned that Njeri had visited the bank to make false claims that she was his widow following his ‘death’ as the officials showed him the forged documents.
“The documents are fake and were made to steal money from my bank account.”
Ali refuted knowing the woman who conspired to rob him as the fake marriage certificate indicated that it was issued in Imenti North Constituency.
The court found Njeri guilty of four counts of forging a death certificate of the businessman, stating that he died in January 2018, at Kenyatta National Hospital.
The child certificate indicated that the tycoon child was seven years which she had presented to the bank with her certificate of conversion to a Muslim.
