Femi Gbajabiamila, Speaker of the House of Representatives, has denied a report that he used public funds to celebrate his mother’s 90th birthday in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Lanre Lasisi, special adviser to the speaker on media, in a statement on Tuesday, said the event was strictly a family affair, and no public funds was expended.
He also denied that the speaker used public funds to take 300 guests to Dubai for the occasion.
Online publication, Sahara Reporters, on Monday, reported that the speaker will hold a one-week celebration in Dubai, starting from March 2, 2020, for his mother, Lateefat Olufunke Gbajabiamila.

The online publication claimed that a member of the planning team told it that, some guests have been booked for special and luxurious accommodation.
It further stated that the source said top personalities, who were not fixed for a trip on private jets, have already been booked for special seats on commercial airlines heading to Dubai.
However, Lasisi said the story was categorically false.

“The story carried by Sahara Reporters on Monday, March 2, 2020, alleging that the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila used public funds to take 300 guests to Dubai for his mother’s birthday is categorically false.
“The speaker, his family and a few friends were in Dubai to celebrate the 90th birthday anniversary of Alhaja Lateefat Olufunke Gbajabiamila, the speaker’s mother.
“For the records, this event was strictly for family members and a few childhood friends for which no public funds were appropriated or expended.

“Indeed not a single politician nor a legislator was present at the event,” the statement said.
