Ibrahim Idris, the Inspector-General of Police, has ordered the immediate dismantling of all roadblocks nationwide particularly on Lagos-Ibadan, Sagamu-Benin, and Benin-Onitsha highways. Other affected highways are: Okene-Abuja, Kaduna-Kano, Katsina – Kano, Otukpo – Enugu, Enugu – Port Harcourt Expressways.
The order was contained in a statement by Jimoh Moshood, police spokeman, on Monday night. It stated that the order was to enable ease of doing business in Nigeria, safeguard, and guarantee free passage of goods and travellers throughout the country. It also said no department or squad should mount road blocks without the permission of the IG.
He stated that Assistant Inspectors-General of Police in charge of Zonal Commands, Commissioners of Police in charge of State Commands and Heads of Departments, must ensure that every patrol vehicle in their respective formation has a conspicuous and legible inscription of patrol vehicle identification number, and emergency numbers and report of any distress by members of public.
