Joe Igbokwe, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Drainage and Water Resources, has blamed Igbos for xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

Nigerians have been killed in waves of hate crime against black immigrants.

Many Nigerians have had their businesses looted and destroyed by South African youth, who are demanding that immigrants leave the country.

But speaking during an interview with an online platform, Lagos Metro Media, on Sunday, Igbokwe said the Igbos are to blame for the attacks.

“Only an arrogant tribe like the Igbos will invade another tribe’s hometown in large numbers and demand equality and the ownership of the homeland,” he was quoted as saying.

“When Igbos go to other people’s country and state, they make no efforts to accommodate their host culture or respect them.

“Ndigbo needs to change and improve some of their mentality by respecting other people’s culture and lives whenever they find themselves in another zone outside theirs.

“When I say I’m not Igbo, they start coming after me.”

The xenophobic attacks in South Africa reached alarming heights over the last five days, forcing the Nigerian government to take actions against the country.

President Muhammadu Buhari has, among other measures, ordered the immediate evacuation of Nigerians who are willing to return home.
