A large number of Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters, have reportedly ambushed a military convoy along Gubio/Damasak highway in northern part of Borno State.
According to Daily Trust, an unspecified number of soldiers sustained injuries in the attack on Saturday, with utility vehicles belonging to the troops carted away by the terrorists after a gun battle.
The soldiers were said to have ran into the ambush at Kareto, while traveling to Gubio area of the state to pick All Progressives Congress (APC) members for their ward congress scheduled to take place in Damasak.
The newspaper added that the soldiers were supposed to accompany the politicians from Abadam to Damasak, venue of the Ward Congress.
Kareto is the hometown of Bukar Gana Kareto, lawmaker who represents Kukawa/ Guzamala/Abadam/ Mobbar Federal Constituency in the house of representatives.
Kareto is said to have been abandoned for years due to the activities of Boko Haram.
Politicians from Abadam Local Government were mobilized for the congress in Damasak, since it had become a no go area because of insecurity.
But the attack on the troops prevented them from attending the congress and were forced to return to Gubio.
The military authorities are yet to confirm the attack.
