Gambian President Yahya Jammeh has secured a 90-day tenure extension by the country’s parliament, which also approved the 90-day state of emergency the embattled leader had pronounced. Jammeh’s tenure officially ends on Thursday, but he insists on not handing over power amidst call by regional leaders on him to do so. The ECOWAS peace effort led by Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has hit a brick wall, spurring a decision to forcefully oust Jammeh.
Currently, the Gambia’s President-elect Adama Barrow is in self-exile in Senegal due to fear for his safety.
