Jaafar Jaafar, publisher of Daily Nigerian, who published the controversial Gandollar video, has reportedly fled his home after receiving threats.
Daily Trust quotes PRNigeria as saying that the development comes as Jaafar is scheduled to appear before the police investigating “criminal conspiracy, defamation, injurious falsehood and inciting violence” against him over the video.
“Ja’afar’s life is in danger as unidentified persons, likely to be ‘hit men’, have been stalking him both at his Abuja and Kano residences,” PRNigeria quoted a close associate of Jaafar to have said.
The journalist had in October 2018, published a video clip of Kano State governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, allegedly showing him collecting dollars as bribe from a contractor.
He was said to have petitioned the former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu, on renewed threats to his life.
The petition reportedly followed Ganduje’s interview with BBC Hausa on March 19, in which he revealed plans to deal with those who released the video.
According to Daily Trust, the IGP monitoring unit had invited Jaafar for questioning on allegations that he was inciting violence and spreading injurious falsehood before his disappearance.
He was meant to appear before the police by 10:00am on April 19, 2021.
