After being detained by the Department of State Services (DSS), Doyin Okupe, the former director general of the Obi -Datti Presidential Campaign Council, has been released.
Newsbreak Nigeria had earlier reported that Okupe was arrested by the secret police at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos while en route to London.
Giving an explanation for his arrest, the DSS in a statement on Thursday by Peter Afunaya, its spokesperson, said that the DSS arrested Okupe on the order of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
“Doyin Okupe was intercepted by the DSS at Terminal 1 of Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, this morning (Thursday) at the instance of the EFCC.
“He has long been handed over to the Commission, which requested for the action. Okupe was billed to fly to London via Virgin Atlantic,” the statement by Afunaya read.
However, in the latest development, Okupe detailed that he has regained his freedom and that the antigraft agency has apologized for the error.
”I was arrested & detained @ the MM int airport, Lagos this morning 12th Jan on my way to UK for medical, yrs of my passport being withheld by the FHC Abuja,” he said.
”I have just left the EFCC office where senior officers in lagos or Abuja apologised to me for the error. OCCUPATIONAL HAZARD abi?”
Recall that Okupe was in December sentenced to two years in prison after being found guilty of Money laundering.
