Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, has apologised for providing misleading on the toll of the recently freed students of the Government Science Secondary School, Katsina State, while they were in captivity.
Shehu had earlier in the week told the BBC that only 10 of the students had been kidnapped, countering the Katsina State government which put the figure at 333.
However, following the return of 344 students to Katsina on Friday, Shehu, in a series of posts on Twitter, explained that he was given the figure he mentioned by “persons that should ideally know”.
The presidential spokesperson said he never aimed to downplay the seriousness of the situation and called on Nigerians to forgive him.
