Liverpool FC player Kolo Toure may likely be questioned by UK authorities over a claim that his wife abused and treated a maid like a “slave”, while she worked for them.
Mother of two Alice Sawyer, a Filipino, painted the Toure’s wife, Awo, as a slave-driver, forcing her to work up to 16 hour days at his mansion in Cheshire. Sawyer alleged that Awo would always make her do demeaning chores such as tying her shoelaces.
“She’d get angry all the time. No matter what I did it was wrong. She’d run her hand over surfaces I’d dusted and make me do it again. She’d get up in my face shouting and pointing her finger,” Sawyer added.
While she lived with them, Awo would not let be friends with the three other Filipino maids working for the couple, Sawyer said. Sawyer added that Awo insisted on being called “Madam”. Sawyer fled the couple’s home last week, after which her family called in the police. Sawyer reportedly returned to the Toures mansion to fetch her passports seized by Awo while she worked there, but was not given. The ex-maid alleged she received less than the minimum wage from the couple, saying she was paid a basic rate of £350 a week for 8am to 8pm shifts Monday to Friday and £8 for every extra hour she worked – sometimes her shifts wouldn’t end until 3am and her pay rate equated to £6.63 an hour. The minimum wage is £7.20 an hour.
Toure earns £90,000 a week.
