Former Super Eagles coach Ike Shorunmu has warned Gernot Rohr against persuading Vincent Enyeama to return to the team. Rohr has said that he would re-invite the former Eagles goalkeeper for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. The former goalkeeper trainer said the player’s decision should be respected and upcoming goalkeeper should be given the chance to grow in the team.

“There have been several calls for him (Enyeama) to return to the team, but he has insisted and his decision should be respected even if the manner at which he exited the international scene was not a good one,” Shorunmu  told Completesportsnigeria.com.

“He should be left alone! The same thing happening now occurred to me when I retired from international football.”

“There were calls from every quarters that I should return but I stood my ground, to allow other goalkeepers grow into the team.‎

“Maybe that’s what Enyeama feels as well. The likes of Ikeme, Daniel Akpeyi and Ikechukwu Ezenwa must be given a chance.”

Enyeama left the national  team after having a disagreement with then coach Sunday Oliseh. The Lille of France goalkeeper had cited disrespect and lack of understanding as reasons for his decision.
