A legislation to criminalise the issuance by electricity companies of ‘estimated billing’ and high tariff for energy usages is underway. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, the Majority Leader of House of Representatives, introduced the bill which passed first reading in the House of Representatives.

Olarenwaju Smart, his media aide, said this in a press release he issued.

Smart said the bill will criminalise the issuance of such bills to consumers who have not been supplied pre-paid meters by the electricity distribution companies.

He further said the failure of the executive arm of government to stop the highhandedness of electricity distribution companies informed the bill. The legislation also aims to resolve the incorrect calculation of purchased electricity credit on the pre-paid meters.

Equally, the bill, Smart added, recommends six months imprisonment for any official of an electricity distribution company found guilty of illegally disconnecting a customer or failing to provide a pre-paid meter for a client after 30 days of applying for one.
