Libya has opposed the EU’s proposal to use military action to stop people’s traffickers. The EU proposed destroying traffickers boats from Africa on the Mediterranean Sea. Libyan ambassador to the UN, Ibrahim Dabbashi said that the intentions of the EU were unclear and very worrying. He stated that “The Libyan government has not been consulted by the European Union. They have left us in the dark about what their intentions are, what kind of military actions they are embarking on
“We want to know how they can distinguish between the fishers’ boats and the traffickers’ boats,” he added.
EU wants the UN approve destroying and halting of any smuggler boat found on Libyan waters. This is a measure through which the EU seeks to stop migrant drowning in the Mediterranean.
The EU also plans to expand maritime rescue services, increase legal means for migrants to come to Europe so they do not turn smugglers and introducing a quota system for distributing refugees within EU countries.
