A two-year-old girl identified simply as Donia has lost an arm to a hungry lion, while on a visit with her father to the Zoo in Ibb governorate in Yemen.
According to Al-Arabiya Al Hadath, the toddler put her hand into the lion’s cage as her father was taking pictures of her before the animal attacked her.
The father of the child went into an instant coma after watching his daughter’s hand inside the lion’s mouth. The child also went it a coma after suffering loss of blood.
Human rights advocates held the child’s father and the administration of the zoo, which is under the control of the Al Houthi militia, accountable for the tragedy.
They also decried the administration’s disregard for visitors by placing iron nets, which are inappropriate for these predators or failing to ensure a sufficient safety distance that prevents visitors and children from getting closer to these animals.
