Liverpool defender, Joe Gomez, insists it was an easy decision for him to ignore rumours linking him with a move to Real Madrid and Aston Villa, and sign a new five-year contract at the Merseyside club.
According to him, he paid little to the speculation suggesting that he could head to Spain.
Gomez told Liverpool Echo recently: “I can’t dispute I heard about these rumours, but until things are concrete with my representatives, I take it all with a pinch of salt.
“Any interest is flattering, but I don’t really see it like as that much of a distraction because until I make my decision, the external noise is just that – external.
“Once I got my head around what I wanted to do, my signing is me understanding the challenge and wanting to rise to it.”
After establishing himself as a first-team regular, Gomez struggled with injuries but appeared in the 2019 UEFA Champions League (UCL) Final as Liverpool won the competition.
He played in the final of the 2019 FIFA Club World Cup with Liverpool winning the competition for the first time in the club’s history.
He was part of the team that won the 2019–20 Premier League, Liverpool’s first league title in 30 years.
