The Nigeria Police Force said it has arrested two of its personnel who assaulted a woman while enforcing the lockdown order in Osun State.
The Force disclosed this in a statement signed by Mohammed Adamu, the Inspector General of Police, and published on its Twitter page on Saturday.
A viral video on Saturday had depicted two police operatives flogging a woman with sticks at the Odo Ori Market in the Iwo area of the state for allegedly violating the lockdown order imposed bu Gboyega Oyetola, the state governor, to curb the spread of the novel Coronavirus.
The lady, identified as Tola Azzez, claimed she was on her way to get drugs and some relief materials for her people. when the police operatives questioned and suddenly hit her with sticks.
Narrating the incident on Twitter, Azeez said she was bruised and in pains, noting that marks had appeared on her thighs.
Reacting, the police said IGP Adamu condemned the action of the policemen as seen in the video, describing it as “unwarranted, unnecessary and unjustifiable”.
The Force said the two officers involved – Ikuesan Taiwo and Abass Ibrahim – have been arrested following the directive of IGP Adamu to the Commissioner of Police in Osun State, adding that their orderly room trial had commenced.
The statement read: “Following the IGP’s condemnation and directives that the Commissioner of Police immediately arrest and bring the officers to book, CP Johnson Kokumo mni, the Commissioner of Police in charge of Osun State Command where the incident occurred, has arrested the officers involved in the unfortunate incident.
“They are Inspector Ikuesan Taiwo with AP NO 251724 and PC Abass Ibrahim with Force No. 509634. The duo are currently being detained and their orderly room trial had since commenced.”
IGP Adamu, according to the statement, reminded officers and men of the force that his administration will not condone any form of misconduct or police brutality.
The country’s top cop pleaded with Nigerians to continue to cooperate with the leadership of the Force, saying the police is being repositioned into an effective, efficient and people-friendly organisation.
