One Ikechukwu Atansi, also known as Agbada, has been arrested after he was accused of killing Rita Onyebuchi, his wife of two months, and living with her corpse.

Atansi, according to reports, had married Rita on January 10, 2010 before he reportedly murdered her with her two-month-old pregnancy.
JohnPaul Onyebuchi, the deceased younger brother, told The Punch that his sister, also his colleague, had not reported to work on Tuesday, March 24, 2020. He said when he tried to reach her via her mobile telephone, it had rang with no response. Calls to Atansi’s phone were also not going through as it was switched off.

He said after she did not report for the work the next day, he decided to visit her residence in Chima’s compound in Ezimezi village, Amawbia, Anambra State on Thursday before going to work. He said he saw a policeman and a crowd gathered at the house.
He explained that he was taken inside to identify his sister’s body after a special crime unit of the police arrived. He said the room was stained with blood and his sister’s body had began to decompose.

JohnPaul, who also added that his mother was present in the house, said he stopped her from seeing the body over fears she might break down.
He said Atansi had been living with the corpse as the neighbours said he had been spotted in the house a number of times. He stated that he was arrested on the day and taken to the state Criminal Investigation Department, Amawbia, Awka.

He however revealed that the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) of the Central Police Station handed the keys to the house to Atansi’s sister who, together with some others, wiped the crime scene clean.
“Something happened after he (brother-in-law) was arrested. The Officer-in-Charge at the state CID said members of its homicide department and members of our family would visit the crime scene to see if we could find more evidence.

“Meanwhile, the place was locked up by the police when Atansi was arrested and the keys were handed over to the investigating police officer of the case at the Central Police Station.
“But surprisingly, the IPO gave the keys to Atansi who then gave them to his sister. So by the time we got to the crime scene with the state CID’s homicide team and a lawyer, we found out that the place had been cleaned up.

“Investigation showed that it was the IPO at the Central Police Station who gave the house keys to Atansi. Atansi gave the keys to his sister who cleaned up the crime scene and removed the evidence in the house. She also took away my sister’s mobile phone,” he said.
He revealed that the Deputy Commissioner of Police said the investigation has been going smoothly and should end soon.

He urged the authorities to do their best to ensure justice is served. He commended the state CID for a job well done.
