A 29-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment on Tuesday for raping and impregnating his 16-year-old niece. The crime was committed in September when the man had slipped into his niece’s room while she was watching television. He was said to have raped her and threatened to kill her if she told anyone about it. According to police spokesman, Thulani Zwane, the incident took placein the Ntambanana area of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The following year, the girl’s mother had noticed a sudden change in the appearance of her child and questioned her before she revealed her uncle had impregnated her.
A case of rape was opened at Ntambanana police station and Empangeni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit started their investigating which led to the arrest of the suspect.
KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, said the sentence would serve as deterrent to other would-be rapists. He encouraged victims of rape to always report the crime and shun any intimidation by the rapist.
